This year’s festivities will be scaled down slightly to meet State and County COVID-19 guidelines, while still ensuring that spectators have an entertaining and safe 4th of July. The Independence Day fun starts at 8:30 p.m. with a presentation of our nation’s flag and will be followed with pre-recorded music. While there will be no live entertainment on the amphitheater stage, attendees may see this as an opportunity to spread across all 70 acres of Civic Center Park and find their own unique vantage point for the big finale of the evening. The sky will light up at 9 p.m. with a spectacular 20-minute-long fireworks display synchronized to patriotic- themed songs simulcast on radio stations The Mix 100.5 FM and 98.5 The Bull. A warm welcome is extended to Indian Wells residents. Palm Desert thanks the City of Indian Wells for helping to defray some of the costs of this year’s celebration. Revelers will once again have an opportunity to buy taste-tempting treats from a variety of food trucks and vendors. Attendees are also encouraged to bring picnic dinners, blankets, and chairs to enjoy the show. Flashlights are recommended for safely exiting the park. Alcoholic beverages, smoking, and portable barbeques are prohibited at this event. Private fireworks are illegal in Civic Center Park and throughout Palm Desert. To protect public safety during the holiday celebration in the busy park, golf carts will not be allowed to operate inside park grounds on July 4. The dog park in Civic Center Park will also be closed that day. Civic Center Park is located at 73510 Fred Waring Drive (Fred Waring and San Pablo Avenue). San Pablo Avenue between Magnesia Falls Drive and the entrance to College of the Desert will be closed beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 3. Other road closures around the park, including Magnesia Falls Drive, are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on July 4. Parking will be allowed at the park until 6 p.m. with access from Fred Waring Drive. Private vehicles will not be allowed into the park once lots are full. For the comfort and convenience of attendees, free, air- conditioned shuttle service will be provided between The Gardens on El Paseo and the park, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The Gardens is located at the corner of El Paseo and San Pablo Avenue. Face masks are required to ride the shuttles. For more information, please call 760-568-1441. FIREWORKS,&FOOD TRUCKS, FUN ON THE FOURTH Rising temperatures can bring increased coyote activity in residential areas. You can help protect yourself, your pets, and your property by following some simple steps. Never feed coyotes. Do not leave pet food outside. Bring pets inside at night and do not leave them outside unattended. Put garbage in tightly closed containers that cannot tip over. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s website – wildlife.ca.gov/Living-with-Wildlife – offers helpful information about how to live with coyotes and other wildlife. Information & registration: 760-862-9848 The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) recently named the City of Palm Desert as a 2021 Sustainability Award winner in the “Active, Healthy & Safe Communities” category for its San Pablo Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project. This collaborative, multi-year process began years ago with Palm Desert’s strategic plan, which envisioned a vibrant City center connected by a reconfigured San Pablo corridor that prioritizes pedestrians, bicycles, and other non-motorized uses. Phase One of the project—the segment between Highway 111 and Fred Waring Drive— was completed in 2020. “Palm Desert has long supported transportation alternatives (like golf carts) that are gentle on the environment,” said Palm Desert Mayor Kathleen Kelly. “The reimagined San Pablo corridor not only makes biking and walking safer and more appealing, it also affords a better driving experience, making it easier for everyone to access this gathering place. We are grateful to SCAG for supporting this initiative in its early development and affirming the end result with this award.” The San Pablo project benefited greatly from the City’s partnerships with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) and the College of the Desert (COD), which allowed for a direct connection of the pedestrian improvements into the CVLink project at San Pablo and Magnesia Falls Drive, allowing easy access between CVLink and the City’s downtown core. Residents and visitors are now able to move freely in the downtown area on foot, on a bicycle, or with a golf cart. SCAG is an association of local governments and agencies that undertake a variety of planning and policy initiatives to encourage a more sustainable Southern California. It is the nation’s largest metropolitan planning organization, representing six counties, 191 cities, and more than 19 million residents. For more information on SCAG’s award, please visit scag.ca.gov/news. Save a Life and Support Your Community The ninth annual 9 Cities Blood Drive Challenge returns this July with Coachella Valley communities competing head-to-head to inspire the most lifesaving donations. This year’s drive takes place on Saturday, July 24, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Palm Desert Community Center. What started as a friendly competition between valley cities is now an essential event that is depended upon to bolster depleted blood supplies over the summer months. Your generosity could save a life while helping Palm Desert reclaim the 9 Cities Challenge title that it missed out on in 2020 by only two units of blood to the City of Palm Springs. Donors at mobile collection centers will receive, while supplies last, a special edition 9 Cities Blood Drive t-shirt. Donors must be at least 15 years of age — donors under 17 require proof of their date of birth and a signed parental consent form (available at the drive) — weigh at least 115 pounds, and feel well on drive day. A photo ID is also required. Donors should maintain their regular meal schedules and increase fluid intake (water is best) in the 24 hours prior to donating. COVID-19 protocols and related public health and safety measures will be in place at the blood drive. Donors, workers, and everyone who attends will be required to wear face coverings, and undergo temperature and symptom checks before accessing the donor waiting area. Donors who are unable to attend the drive are encouraged to donate in Palm Desert’s name anytime between July 1 and August 31 at LifeStream’s Rancho Mirage or La Quinta centers. They should request that their donations be counted toward Palm Desert’s 9 Cities Challenge total. The Palm Desert Community Center is located at 43900 San Pablo Avenue adjacent to Civic Center Park. Fireworks are not toys. Fireworks and sparklers are designed to explode or throw off showers of hot sparks and they burn at temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than a blowtorch. More fires are reported on Independence Day in the United States than on any other day of the year and fireworks account for nearly half of those fires. The Riverside County Fire Department provides a website with fire safety and emergency incident information as well as the dates and locations of public fireworks displays at www.rvcfire.org. For more information, please call 951-940-6985. Renovation is underway on the Presidents’ Plaza East and West parking lots that serve businesses and their patrons on El Paseo, Highway 111, and adjacent frontage roads between Larkspur Lane and Portola Avenue. The parking lots will undergo several improvements including new asphalt concrete pavement, planter areas with enhanced landscaping, modernized trash enclosures with ramps, new striped parking stalls, parking canopies with and without solar, and enhanced pedestrian walkways. A major project goal is to keep the community, patrons, employees and business owners informed throughout the life of the project. Weekly updates complete with maps showing areas of expected construction activity can be found on the project’s website. Businesses will remain open during the project and will be accessible during construction. Directional signage and traffic control devices are in place around the site for your safety. Your continued support and patronage of the many businesses that utilize these parking lots is appreciated. For additional information on this project, call 844-226-2220 or visit www.presidentsplazavision.com. Residents, business owners, and other interested parties may also sign up for email updates by texting PRESIDENTS to 22828. STAY INFORMED DURING PRESIDENTS’ PLAZA IMPROVEMENTS PROTECT YOUR PETS ON JULY 4 DON’T GET BURNED BY FIREWORKS ON JULY 4 MAKE POOL SAFETY A PRIORITY The celebration of our nation’s independence is a joyful occasion, but the loud noises associated with fireworks and other festivities on July 4 can be confusing and frightening to some pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) advises pet owners to keep their dogs and cats at home in a quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area during fireworks displays. The City of Palm Desert encourages residents who live in affected areas to follow the SPCA’s advice and protect their pets. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their pets indoors during the 20-minute fireworks display at Civic Center Park scheduled to start at 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 4. For more information about the City’s Independence Day Celebration, please call 760-568-1441. Palm Desert Earns Award for San Pablo Streetscape Project Although it is 100% preventable, drowning is the leading cause of accidental injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4 in Riverside County. Nearly 90% of all drownings and near-drownings occur in backyard pools or spas. A drowning child can lose consciousness in less than 30 seconds and suffer irreversible brain damage after just four minutes. To reduce the threat of drowning, remember the ABCs of water safety: A – Adult Supervision Assign an adult to keep their eyes on children in the water at all times. B – Barriers Ensure that pools are protected by fences, self-closing and self- latching gates, motion sensors, and window and door alarms. C – Classes Parents and caregivers should take CPR and First Aid. Swimming courses are recommended for children and adults. Swim courses for children of all ages are available throughout the summer at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center. For more information, please visit www.rvcfire.org.
