A CELEBRATION OF SPRING & RENEWAL
WILDFLOWER
FESTIVAL
A CELEBRATION OF SPRING & RENEWAL
The annual Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival returns in
March for a month-long celebration of spring and renewal
promoting wellness, recreation, and the beautiful outdoors.
To ensure a safe and sensational Festival, the event
is blossoming into an exotic hybrid of online activities
and individualized outdoor challenges designed to raise
awareness of the Coachella Valley’s many wildflowers while
encouraging people to explore and support the Santa Rosa
and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.
Winter rains have set the stage for a colorful wildflower
season and an innovative mix of activities will make this
year’s Festival even more accessible and fun for everyone.
Festival highlights include Flowers in the Field, in which
participants can download a Field Guide to Coachella Valley
Flowers and see how many blooms they can identify; and a
“30 Miles in 30 Days for 30 Dollars” challenge that invites
participants to walk, hike, run, ride or roll to help raise funds
for Friends of the Desert Mountains while earning a special
Wildflower Festival t-shirt. Other planned activities include
scavenger hunts, a raffle, and much more.
For more information about the 2021
Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival,

Join the City of Palm Desert and celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 22,
by remembering to reduce, reuse, and recycle every day.
In anticipation of Earth Day, the City is hosting
a used oil recycling event on Saturday, March 6,
from 9 a.m. to noon that gives Palm Desert residents
a convenient and
environmentally friendly
way to safely dispose of
their used oil and oil filters.
The event will take place
at AutoZone, located at
34860 Monterey Avenue.
Workers at the event will accept up to five gallons of
used oil per vehicle.
Participants who turn in a used oil filter will
receive a free one of equal or lesser value. All
participants will receive a
free shop rag, funnel, and
drainer while supplies last.
Another helpful and
convenient way to support
sustainability is to donate
your old and broken
electronics to Desert Arc
for recycling. Just call 760-404-1370 for more
information.
You can also create a meal plan to save
money and reduce food waste at home
(epa.gov/recycle/reducing-wasted-food-home).
Composting is another great
way to love the earth. Learn
more by attending a free virtual
composting workshop online at
rcwaste.org/classes.
Other Earth Day-related events include Palm
Desert’s annual Neighborhood Clean-Up on
Saturday, April 17. For more information about the
Clean-Up and how you can participate, please see
the enclosed flyer or call Burrtec Waste & Recycling
Services at 760-340-2113.

City representatives during Palm Desert’s Virtual Town Halls.
The next Town Hall will take place online on Tuesday, March 16,

Held as a Zoom meeting due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
each Virtual Town Hall features different aspects of Palm Desert.
The March 16 Town Hall will focus on the eastern part of the
community and area neighborhoods, touching on topics including
recent changes to Freedom Park, an overview of Palm Desert’s
wonderful park system, and much more.
While each Town Hall will emphasize information about a
particular aspect of the City, these informative and free meetings are
open to all who wish to participate.

Celebrate Earth Day and Recycle
One of the priorities in the City’s Envision Palm Desert Strategic Plan is to
help ensure the development of high quality housing for people at all income
levels. Working with the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition (CVHC), the City
is fulfilling that vision by helping to provide a chance at home ownership for
people who might otherwise never have dreamed of moving into their own
new home.
The City recently approved and is in the process of transferring 14 lots that
it owned to CVHC. The nonprofit housing coalition will use the lots to develop
14 single-family detached homes that will be made available through CVHC’s
Self-Help program, which sells new homes at an affordable cost to very low
and low income first-time homebuyers. Homebuyer families form an informal
association and agree to help each other build their homes with technical
assistance provided by a competent construction supervisor. The 14 new Palm
Desert homes will be made available to qualified households which include a
member who is employed in Palm Desert.
As part of the project, the City has also set aside $350,000 that will allow
the City to provide up to $25,000 in additional assistance to qualifying very low
and lower income first-time homebuyers.
The recent transfer of 14 City-owned lots to CVHC is the latest example
of the City’s commitment to help provide housing for all. This commitment
is also illustrated by the City’s two affordable for-sale housing projects as well
as the more than 1,100 City-owned affordable rental housing units located
throughout Palm Desert.
For more information about the 14 new Self-Hope homes and to place your
name on an interest list, please call CVHC at 760-347-3157.

ACROSS INCOME LEVELS SunLine Transit Agency
recently launched SunRide,
a flexible, on-demand,
app-based micro transit
service available along
Palm Desert’s Cook Street
corridor.
Riders use the service
with a smartphone app,
TransLoc, to call for a
SunRide vehicle (a small
neighborhood-friendly
van) to pick them up at
a destination within the
designated zones and/or bus stops. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are
available upon request and all vehicles provide enhanced health and
safety measures for passengers and operators. The cost is only $2 per trip.
SunRide is available Monday-Friday 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Trips
can be scheduled ahead of time or on-demand with an approximate
15-minute wait to match with a driver.
To use this new rideshare program, passengers first download the
free TransLoc app to their smartphone and then request a ride. Following
a SunRide request, the TransLoc app will provide passengers with an
estimated pick-up time, track their vehicle in real-time, and alert them
when their vehicle is about to arrive. Passengers will also be notified when
their ride is about to reach its destination.
For more information about SunRide and available destinations, visit
SunLine.org/SunRide or download “TransLoc” in your Google Play or
Apple App store.
Palm Desert’s Art Documentary Film Series concludes its 13th year
on Thursday March 11, at 6 p.m. with an online discussion of the free
screening of Leonora Carrington: The Lost
Surrealist.
This unique documentary tells the
story of little-known British surrealist
Leonora Carrington, a key part of the
surrealist movement during its heyday
in Paris. Through interviews with her
sons, this film explores her dramatic
evolution from British debutante to
artist in exile, living out her days in
Mexico City. Viewers are taken on a
journey into Carrington’s darkly strange
and cinematic world where she herself
inhabited her paintings, filled with
creatures from her childhood and
dreams. As her family describes it, she
saw the “fantastic in the real” and the
“mysterious was always right around the corner.”
The 2021 documentary film series is presented by the City
of Palm Desert Public Art Department and the University of
California, Riverside Palm Desert Center. Upon registration, you
will receive a link and password to screen the film virtually in
advance, followed by a moderated discussion at the scheduled time.
Participation is free. For more information and to register online, visit
palmdesert.ucr.edu/events-programs.
In the coming months, the City of Palm Desert will repave, beautify, and
improve the Presidents’ Plaza East and West Parking Lots.
These aging, heavily used lots are a vital part of Palm Desert’s downtown,
serving scores of businesses and their patrons on El Paseo, Highway 111, and
adjacent frontage roads between Larkspur Lane and Portola Avenue.
Improvements as part of the approximately $7.8 million project include
new asphalt concrete pavement, planter areas with enhanced landscaping,
modernized trash enclosures with ramps, new striped parking stalls, parking
canopies with and without solar, and enhanced pedestrian walkways.
Construction on the project is scheduled to start in April with completion
targeted for November of this year.
To receive the latest updates on the Presidents’ Plaza East and West
Parking Lots Improvement Project, you can text PRESIDENTS to 22828
or email info@presidentsplazavision.com. There is also a toll-free project
hotline: 844-226-2220.

MARCH/APRIL
2021
As part of its efforts to support the
community and the economy during
the pandemic, the City of Palm Desert
is providing local businesses with
free personal protective
equipment, also known
as PPE.
The equipment, which
was provided to the City
by the Coachella Valley
Economic Partnership
(CVEP), includes 120,000
face masks, 7,900 bottles
of hand sanitizer, and
3,600 face shields.
City Council members
and City staff have been
proactively delivering the PPE to
local businesses with more than 500
businesses contacted and over half of
the equipment already distributed.
Part of CVEP’s “Million Mask
Giveaway,” the free PPE for businesses
program is funded by the California
Governor’s Office of Emergency
Services, with support from the City
and CVEP, and is intended to relieve
businesses of the cost and hassle of
purchasing PPE.
Local business leader Eric Morcus,
owner of Kaiser Grille Palm Desert,
said the PPE has been a tremendous
benefit, helping to protect his staff
and guests from COVID-19 while
relieving him of the burden of finding
and purchasing quality
protective equipment at a
stressful and difficult time.
“For me to source
masks and sanitizer, it’s a
pain and you never know
what you’re going to
get,” Morcus said. “Here
it is already there for me.
I can’t thank the City
enough.”
The PPE initiative is
yet another way that the
City is supporting the community and
protecting the health of Palm Desert
residents and businesses through Unite
Palm Desert, a City-wide campaign
to ensure that Palm Desert flourishes
during and after the COVID-19
pandemic. Other elements of Unite
Palm Desert include economic relief for
businesses, rental assistance, essential
needs/nonprofit support, no cost
COVID-19 testing, and much more.
Businesses interested in receiving
PPE and those who want to learn
more about Unite Palm Desert are
invited to call 760-776-6362 or email
