Information: 760-862-9848 Residents who wish to report a problem with a short-term vacation rental are encouraged to call Code Compliance during business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday) at 760-346-0611 or call the City’s Short-Term Rental Hotline at 760-862-6900. Program participants must use an approved lender. For a list of approved lenders and more information, contact Riverside County EDA at the number below. A nonprofit organization that serves adults ages 50 and up, the Joslyn Center welcomes up to 400 visitors a day and offers more than 50 programs each week including: exercise and strengthening classes; entertainment and social events; wellness seminars; aging mastery training; brain boot camps; hearing, vision and blood testing; and much more. Membership is $30 per year. The Joslyn Center benefits more than just its 2,000 members serving as one of Palm Desert’s two official community cooling centers when summer temperatures soar. Through its Meals on Wheels program, the Center delivered more than 13,600 meals to people, and more than 3,200 meals to those people’s pets, over the past year. Penny’s Pantry at the Center provides food to roughly 190 needy residents a month distributing more than 2,300 bags of groceries a year. People who might not have a healthy support network benefit from the Joslyn’s Telephone Safety Net program, which placed more than 2,600 caring calls to these residents last year alone. The Joslyn Center is led by an eleven-member Board of Directors who oversee six full-time and three part-time staff including Executive Director Jack Newby, who has headed the staff team since 2017. The staff is assisted by a team of dedicated and highly qualified volunteers who, last year alone, contributed more than 15,100 hours of service. The City of Palm Desert has always supported the Joslyn Center and its mission, having donated land for the establishment of the facility in 1981 and contributing to the Center’s annual budget through the Cove Communities, which includes the cities of Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage. For more information about the Joslyn Center, please call 760-340-3220 or visit www.joslyncenter.org. Celebrate with us and a few thousand friends by taking on a fast, scenic marathon course. Participants can run as individuals or as members of a two- or three-person relay team. There is also fun for kids who can run in their own 1K race. All races begin and end at Civic Center Park, which will again host a post-race festival featuring the newest shoes and apparel from New Balance and vendors from throughout the Coachella Valley. Attendees will be able to grab some post-race food and cheer on friends and family while enjoying a frosty beverage at the finish line beer garden. Ford Chapter of Mensch Foundation International will hold its 10th annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, January 28, at 1 p.m. at Palm Desert’s Civic Center Park. More than a decade ago, the United Nations General Assembly designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day as an annual day set aside to remember the Holocaust’s many victims, celebrate those who survived, and remind the world to never forget what happened. The official date, January 27, coincides with the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The Palm Desert event on January 28 will include a variety of musical performances and speakers as well as the presentation of Mensch awards to Monsignor Howard Lincoln and posthumously to former First Lady Betty Ford. A remembrance walk from the park amphitheater to the nearby Palm Desert Holocaust Memorial will serve as a moving conclusion to the program. Civic Center Park is located at Fred Waring Drive and San Pablo Avenue. Limited seating will be provided and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and/or blankets to participate in comfort. PARK CEREMONY RECOGNIZES INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY POPULAR HALF MARATHON AND 5K RETURN TO PALM DESERT 19TH ANNUAL PALM DESERT SENIOR GAMES AND INTERNATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL Discover award-winning art, poetry, photography, and literature from young people around the world as part of a unique exhibition on display in the Community Room at the Palm Desert Library in January. The exhibition features winners from the 2018 Young Artists and Authors Showcase, an annual contest that encourages youth from across the globe to creatively express the mission of Sister Cities International. Founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, Sister Cities International is a nonpartisan nonprofit that works to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation — one individual, one community at a time. The theme of the 2018 contest, “The Art of Diplomacy,” highlights the importance of citizen diplomacy and the innovative ways that citizen diplomats achieve peace through people-to-people interaction. This exhibition’s tour began at the Sister Cities International Annual Conference in August. Each month from August through June, the exhibition is shipped to a different sister city. Prior to coming to Palm Desert, the exhibition was on display in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It will be heading to Mesa, Arizona, following its time here. The Palm Desert Library is located at 73300 Fred Waring Drive. For more information about the Young Artists and Authors Showcase, please visit www.sistercities.org/YAAS. Exhibition Recognizes YOUTHFUL CREATIVITY WORLDWIDE This February, hundreds of athletes ages 35 to 90, return to Palm Desert to compete in the 19th Annual Palm Desert Senior Games and International Sports Festival. Registration is now open for this popular event, which will take place at venues throughout Palm Desert from February 7 through February 10. The first senior games of the year in California, Palm Desert’s festival is unique among other official senior games in the State as it allows athletes, ages 35 and up, to enjoy great competition in a variety of sports including track and field, soccer, golf, pickleball, table tennis, volleyball, and more. A variety of age divisions allows athletes to compete against their peers in individual and team sports while chasing gold, silver, and bronze medals. The Desert Recreation District and the City of Palm Desert host the Senior Games, which will begin with an Opening Ceremony at the Civic Center Park tennis courts on Friday, February 8, at 9 a.m. The deadline for athletes to register is Monday, January 15. Spectator admission for all sports is free and open to the public. To learn more or register, please visit www.desertseniorgames.org or call 760-568-2560. Palm Desert’s Art Documentary Film Series returns for its 11th year in 2019 with a fresh lineup of compelling films designed for lovers of inspiring and thought provoking cinema. The free, art-themed documentary series begins January 17 with a screening of Desert X: Land Art at the Edge of the City. This KCET Artbound episode explores the 2017 Desert X Exhibition, which included 16 works of art that were on display throughout the Coachella Valley from February 25 to April 30. Artists highlighted in the episode include Doug Aitken, Lita Albuquerque, Claudia Compte, Armando Lerma, Jeffrey Gibson, Phillip K. Smith, and more. A question and answer session with Jenny Gil, executive director for Desert X, will follow the screening. The documentary film series is presented by the City of Palm Desert Public Art Department and the University of California, Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center. Films screen selected Thursdays, January through April, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at UCR Palm Desert, 75080 Frank Sinatra Drive. Each screening will include a featured speaker who will answer questions about that night’s film. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended. April 25 Herb & Dorothy 50 x 50 In 2008, legendary art collectors Herb and Dorothy Vogel made an announcement that stunned the art world. The retired postal worker (Herb) and librarian (Dorothy), who built a world-class art collection on their humble salaries, gave that collection to the public. Developed as the follow-up film to Megumi Sasaki’s award-winning 2008 documentary Herb & Dorothy, Herb & Dorothy 50 X 50 captures the last chapter of the Vogel’s extraordinary life, raising various questions on art, and what it takes to support art in today’s society. March 21 AS IS by Nick Cave In 2015, visual artist Nick Cave traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana to begin an eight month art project leading up to a one-time multimedia performance using hundreds of people from the local community. This behind the scenes documentary shows how one man brought people from all walks of life together using the power of art.
