STREE T Kicks Off First Weekend's Sixth Season
November marks the kickoff of First Weekend Palm Desert’s sixth season with the
return of STREET – a unique celebration of music, art, fashion and food inspired
by street culture taking place Friday, November 2, from 5 to 11 p.m. on The Deck
at Westfield Palm Desert.
Focused around energetic art and music with an urban flare, STREET will
feature unique artworks and live music from a variety of performers playing
ska, reggae, and hip-hop. Food trucks and local favorite Stuft Pizza will provide
mouthwatering treats in an outdoor setting that offers some of the Valley’s
most breathtaking views.
First Weekend featured events continue in December with a party to
Celebrate the Season at The Gardens on El Paseo featuring
“A Rockin’ Holiday Tribute to the King!” starring Scot Bruce as
Elvis Presley.
On Friday, December 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the center
court at The Gardens will echo with the sounds of some of
Elvis’ greatest hits and holiday favorites. The nostalgic music will
complement the classic cars of Cruise Night El Paseo, which will be
motoring up and down the street and on display at The Gardens
that night. Free pictures with Santa Claus, strolling carolers,
hot cider and cocoa, and fun children’s activities led by the
Palm Desert Youth Committee will add to the festive spirit.
These events are only the start of the First Weekend season. Taking place in
Palm Desert every first weekend of the month, November through May, the public
is invited to discover a celebration of arts and entertainment, from guided art tours
and musical theater to classic cars and concerts.
For more information about all of the exciting First Weekend events, please

at Civic Center Park
Palm Desert’s residents, businesspeople, and visitors are quick to recognize the many qualities that
make Palm Desert a uniquely wonderful place. What most do not see, however, is Palm Desert’s
involved citizenry who give generously of their valuable time and countless talents to serve our community.
More than 100 resident volunteers serve on the City’s 17 standing committees and commissions or
represent the community through appointments to outside organizations including the Palm Springs
Airport Commission, Coachella Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District, and Joslyn Center. Many
more residents serve in a volunteer capacity as Palm Desert Library or Public Art Program docents or
with Palm Desert’s award-winning Citizens on Patrol (COPs) team.
The Palm Desert City Council, along with City staff, deeply appreciate and gratefully recognize
the service of Palm Desert’s volunteers who selflessly dedicate themselves to community service and
to making Palm Desert a community of which we can all be exceptionally proud.
CITY CITIZEN VOLUNTEERS Thanks
2019 Calendars Celebrate
Palm Desert as
T he City’s 2019 calendars arrive in
November once again filled with compelling
images of the many attractions, events,
and amenities that make Palm Desert an
exceptional community.
From pickleball at Freedom Park to a Golf Cart Parade down El Paseo, the new calendar
and its theme Palm Desert – A Place to Play colorfully illustrate the fact that while our
community is an ideal location for living and working, it is a particularly great place to have
fun and play.
The free, 28-page calendars are available for pickup at Palm Desert City Hall, the Palm
Desert Library, the Joslyn Center, Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce, Desert Willow Golf
Resort, and at other convenient locations throughout the City. For more information, please
call 760-776-6380.
A Place to Play
The desert’s largest celebration of choreography and dance celebrates its 21st year in Palm Desert this
November as The Choreography Festival returns to the McCallum Theatre stage.
This one of a kind festival, taking place Saturday, November 10, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 11, at
4 p.m. highlights dance as an art form while creating a venue for emerging and established choreographers
and developing new dance audiences.
Finalists were selected from submissions from across the country with choreographers competing for
thousands of dollars in awards.
The 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to philanthropist Glorya Kaufman as part of
the Saturday evening show, which features performances by professional dance companies.
Sunday’s competition will include performances by pre-professional companies. The projects give
students a chance to work with a professional choreographer, learn an original piece of choreography, and
perform on the McCallum Theatre stage.
Festival tickets are available by calling 760-340-ARTS (2787), online at www.mccallumtheatre.com,
or at the McCallum Theatre Box Office.
The Palm Desert Community Gallery will highlight artwork from the Sun City Palm Desert Printmakers in
its new exhibition on display from November 16 through January 25. A public reception will be held to
honor the artists on Monday, January 14, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The Sun City Palm Desert Printmakers is a group of 10 artists who met while taking art classes with
artist and instructor Irene Ryan Maloney in Sun City Palm Desert. Over the past six years, the artists have
evolved into a group that works on original projects in the printmaking techniques of linocut, serigraphy,
monoprint, etching, and intaglio.
At the heart of the organization is the group’s interest in placing importance on the art dialogue.
Living at Sun City has also given the artists the opportunity to establish an onsite “Art Village” that
includes a printmaking press and dark room spaces all of which enable the Printmakers to create more
prolifically.
The artists included in the exhibition are Peg Bascom, Cheryl Dillard, Gro Marit Kleitsch, Irene Ryan
Maloney, DJ Miles, Nancy Patrick, Ronna Sambol, Lee Sharp, Sandy Stout, and Erika Waterman.
The Palm Desert Community Gallery is located in Palm Desert City Hall, and is open Monday through
Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 664 or visit

A fter a summer makeover that added fascinating new
exhibits and colorful artwork depicting Palm Desert through
the decades, the Historical Society of Palm Desert Museum is
open for the season.
The Museum, located in what was the community’s first
fire station and fire chief’s residence, underwent significant
work during its four-month summer closure.
Improvements included the creation of a magnificent
new, wall-sized mural that colorfully illustrates Palm
Desert’s development from empty desert to celebrity-laden
winter resort in the 1950s to the thriving, year-round
community we know today. Created by artist Warner Graves,
who volunteered his time for the project, the mural is the
premier feature of the Museum’s makeover.
Other highlights include: an exhibit showcasing longtime
Palm Desert resident William Boyd, more commonly known as
50s film and television cowboy Hopalong Cassidy; information
about Palm Desert’s iconic Marrakesh and Sandpiper
developments; and a fascinating display about the Miles Bates
House, designed by noted Mid-Century architect Walter S.
White. The display includes a scale replica of a section of the
remarkably distinctive and rarely utilized wave roof that White
used on the Bates house.
Located at 72861 El Paseo (just west of Highway 74),
the Historical Society of Palm Desert Museum is open Friday
through Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information,
