A PUBLICATION OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT
Say goodbye to 2020 and celebrate the New Year by
discovering the fresh and exciting artworks now on display on
the El Paseo median as part of Palm Desert’s 2021/2022 El Paseo
Sculpture Exhibition.
The 18 sculptures that make up the new exhibition include
an Ode to Marshmallows (one toasted), a metal golfer with a
fanciful head that will be the apple of some viewers’ eyes, and a
grouping of kites taking flight that show off some consummate
crochet work. These fun and uplifting artworks are joined by a
variety of more abstract pieces that give free reign to viewers’
imaginations.
Palm Desert’s Art in Public Places Commission selected the
18 artworks from among scores of artists who submitted their
work for consideration. The 2021/2022 Exhibition includes
works from local Coachella Valley artists as well as sculptures
created by artists from around the United States.
The artworks will be displayed on pads in the El Paseo
median for two years. Once pandemic-related restrictions
are lifted, docent-led walking tours will resume featuring the
Exhibition’s sculptures and the City’s public art collection. These
tours are always free and open to the public.
For more information, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 664
or visit www.palmdesertart.org.
The City of Palm Desert is inviting children to show off their imagination and artistic
skills to create artworks honoring our local law enforcement officers on a special day.
The City’s first ever art drive-in and drop-off event will take place on National Law
Enforcement Appreciation Day, Saturday, January 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. Art can be
dropped off at the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station, located at 73705 Gerald Ford Drive.
Deputies will be onsite to accept the artwork safely from the vehicles. All artwork
received will be displayed in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Station. For more information,
please email alawrence@cityofpalmdesert.org.

The City’s eagerly anticipated transformation of San Pablo Avenue continues full speed with work on
Phase Two well underway and project completion on the horizon.
Phase Two improvements, which are focused on San Pablo between Fred Waring Drive and Magnesia
Falls Drive, include the construction of two new roundabouts, one at Magnesia Falls and one at the entrance
to the College of the Desert.
Additional project features include enhanced pedestrian walkways, new landscaping and sidewalks,
improved lighting, on-street parking, pedestrian crosswalks, new bikeways, and traffic signal improvements.
These improvements will complement the reinvention of San Pablo between Highway 111 and
Fred Waring that was accomplished in Phase One. It will also connect this critically important artery for
pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, to CV Link, the more than 40-mile pathway that will provide a safe and
active alternative route across the entire Coachella Valley.
The work on Phase Two requires the closure of portions of San Pablo and adjacent sidewalks between the
College of the Desert entrance and Magnesia Falls, as well as the closure of Magnesia Falls between Monterey
Avenue and the Palm Desert Aquatic Center.
It is anticipated that all of San Pablo between Fred Waring and Magnesia Falls will be closed in early 2021
for the final stages of construction with completion of the entire project projected to take place this summer.
During this closure, access to City Hall, Civic Center Park, and buildings within the area will be facilitated by
a temporary traffic signal that will be installed at the Fred Waring entrance to the Civic Center.
While the work on San Pablo will make it more usable and enjoyable for pedestrians, the worksite is not
a safe place for walking or biking. The public is asked to heed the cones and signs restricting access to work
areas and avoid the sidewalks in the construction zone for their safety and that of all concerned.
For more information about the project and the City’s vision for San Pablo, call 844-329-5999, email
info@visionsanpablo.com, or visit visionsanpablo.com.
With CV Link under construction in Palm Desert,
the City is seeking your input on potential bicycle
and golf cart routes that will connect the more than
40-mile alternative transportation pathway to key
locations throughout the community.
These key destinations include educational
institutions, retail and restaurants, and residential
neighborhoods, as well as a variety of other places
that you feel are important to the community.
One connection that is already in the works is a
link to the Bump & Grind trailhead that will provide
better access to a variety of outdoor activities for
bikers and hikers in Palm Desert and across the
Coachella Valley.
Planners are evaluating additional routes as well as
the development of multiple connections that could
create a Palm Desert CV Link Connection network.
Selected routes will be designed for construction.
The deadline for public input is January 31 and
sharing yours is easy.
Please visit cityofpalmdesert.org/cvlink to
share your thoughts and learn more.

The Gerald R. Ford Chapter of Mensch Foundation International will
hold its 11th annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony
on Wednesday, January 27, at 11 a.m. The ceremony, which usually takes
place in Civic Center Park, will be held virtually this year because of the
COVID-19 pandemic.
More than a decade ago, the United
Nations General Assembly designated
International Holocaust Remembrance Day
as an annual day set aside to remember the
Holocaust’s many victims, celebrate those
who survived, and remind the world to never
forget what happened. The official date,
January 27, coincides with the liberation of
the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The public is invited to visit the Palm Desert
Holocaust Memorial in Civic Center Park on
January 27 and on any day throughout the
year to learn and reflect.
For more information and to secure an invitation to this year’s online
Zoom event, please send an email to menschfoundation@yahoo.com by

are happening in your community while interacting
with the Mayor and other key City representatives
during the kick-off of Palm Desert’s Virtual Town Halls
on Tuesday, January 19, starting at 4 p.m.
Held online as a result of the COVID-19
pandemic, each Virtual Town Hall will feature a
different area of Palm Desert with the first event
focusing on the northern side of the City, including
the neighborhoods around the Cal State and UCR
campuses. While each Town Hall will emphasize
information about a particular part of the City, these
informative and free meetings are open to all who
wish to participate.

Palm Desert’s Art Documentary Film Series returns for its 13th year in
2021 with a lineup of compelling films designed for lovers of inspiring
and thought provoking cinema.
The free, art-themed documentary series begins January 14 with
an online screening of YARN. This unique documentary introduces
viewers to the artists who are
redefining the tradition of knit
and crochet, bringing yarn out
of the house and into the world.
YARN weaves together wool
graffiti artists, circus performers,
and structural designers into
a visually-striking look at the
women who are making a
creative stance while building one of modern art’s hottest trends.
The City is especially happy to have the opportunity to share YARN
and Jean-Michel Basquiat – The Radiant Child, both of which had been
scheduled to be screened as part of Palm Desert’s 2020 film series, but
were canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2021 documentary film series is presented by the City of Palm
Desert Public Art Department and the University of California, Riverside
Palm Desert Center. Films screen virtually, with moderated discussion, on
third Thursdays, January through March, at 6 p.m. Participation is free
although registration is required. For more information and reservations,
please call 760-834-0800 or register online at palmdesert.ucr.edu.
Additional films include:
February 11
The Lost Surrealist
Directed by Teresa Griffiths, this fascinating
documentary explores the life and career
of British surrealist Leonora Carrington who
worked alongside Max Ernst, Andre Breton,
and Pablo Picasso in Paris at the height of
surrealism. The film explores her dramatic
evolution from debutante to artist in exile,
living out her days in Mexico City.
March 11
Jean-Michel Basquiat – The Radiant Child
Centered on a rare interview that director
and friend Tamra Davis shot with Jean-Michel
Basquiat more than 20 years ago, this film
chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the
young artist. In the crime-ridden New York
City of the 1970s, he covers the city with the
graffiti tag ‘SAMO.’ In 1981 he puts paint
on canvas for the first time, and by 1983 he
is an artist with “rock star status” achieving
critical and commercial success while being
confronted by racism from peers.
The City of Palm Desert continues to offer convenient, drive-thru
COVID-19 testing at the Palm Desert Civic Center.
The testing, offered in partnership with Borrego Health and the
Desert Recreation District, will help protect public health and increase
Riverside County’s testing rate, a key metric in reopening the economy.
Testing appointments are available between 7 -11 a.m. on the second
and fourth Tuesdays of the month through February. Appointments are
encouraged, but not necessary.
Testing is taking place in the parking lot at Palm Desert Civic Center
Park, 43900 San Pablo Avenue.
If community demand for appointments is high, additional testing
dates could be scheduled.
While insurance information is required when making an appointment,
there is typically no cost to those being tested and uninsured residents
will receive free testing.
To schedule an appointment, please contact Borrego Health at

JANUARY/FEBRUARY
2021
As part of its efforts to support local businesses, the City
of Palm Desert has created Lupine Plaza, an inviting new
open air dining destination adjacent to El Paseo.
Lupine Plaza capitalizes on the Coachella Valley’s
exceptional climate, the closure of a one-block section of
an underutilized street, and its ideal location at the northern
intersection of Lupine Lane and El Paseo, to provide a safe
and charming new space for al fresco fare and refreshment.
Diners are invited to find a seat under an umbrella at one
of Lupine Plaza’s many tables and enjoy take out from one of
dozens of area restaurants.
Shaded outdoor seating is available on a first-come,
first-served basis, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., which means
that residents and visitors will find something to satisfy their
cravings from coffee at sunrise to
an after dinner drink beneath the
Plaza’s canopy of string lights.
Palm Desert restaurants are
invited to utilize Lupine Plaza
to benefit their businesses. The
space has been designed as a
ready canvas for restaurateurs to
showcase their innovative ideas.
Any Palm Desert restaurant can
use the location to serve delivered
or takeout meals to their patrons.
One local restaurant created a
pop-up bar inside the Plaza to sell
drinks to thirsty diners.
So far, the project has been a tremendous success
according to Cecilia Garcia who, along with her husband,
Rigo, owns nearby Fresh Agave Mexican Bar and Grill.
“It did help us a lot,” Garcia said. “We increased our
business.”
Garcia said the pandemic has made it especially hard
for restaurants and their employees to make ends meet, but
Lupine Plaza has helped Fresh Agave and other local eateries.
“People love it,” she said. “We’ve had people eating
there from Mastro’s, Blaze Pizza, the Greek place, from
(Piero’s) PizzaVino, Armando’s, Tommy Bahama’s, and
Sullivan’s (Steakhouse). People just come and eat from
everywhere.”
Lupine Plaza is one component of Unite Palm
Desert, a City-wide campaign to ensure that Palm
Desert flourishes during and after the COVID-19
pandemic. Other elements of Unite Palm Desert
include economic relief for businesses, rental assistance,
essential needs/nonprofit support, and much more.
For more information about Unite Palm Desert, Lupine
Plaza, and how restaurants can take advantage of this
fresh new opportunity, please call 760-776-6362 or email
